It was reported that an early afternoon roll-over occurred in the village of Aniak on Sunday, where the driver and her passenger suffered injuries. An investigation into the incident would lead to the arrest of others involved in an altercation prior to the accident.
According to the Alaska State Troopers, 25-year-old Jasmin Simeon was traveling at a high rate of speed on the airport road when she “left the roadway and overturned,” injuring herself and her passenger. When the community’s VPSO and an Alaska Wildlife Trooper responded to the scene and conducted an investigation into the incident, they found that the two people had just left a residence in the community where a fight had broken out. It was reported that several people were involved in this prior incident.
The Wildlife Trooper and the VPSO went to the residence to investigate, but the alleged altercation had already broken up. Two individuals were identified, and the trooper and VPSO would later contact 35-year-old Ivan Matter and 37-year-old Calvin Phillips at different residences.
It would be revealed that Matter was operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, and had possessed a firearm while under the influence as well as had been operating a motor vehicle while his license was revoked. He also failed to submit to a chemical test as required.
Phillips was found to be in possession of a loaded firearm while intoxicated.
Both Phillips and Matter were arrested and transported to the YKCC in Bethel to await arraignment.
The investigation is continuing, Troopers believe that there were others involved in the altercation at the initial residence. They ask anyone with information into the incident to contact them in Aniak at 675-4398.
