In the wee hours of the morning on Sunday, tragedy struck four campers as they lay asleep in their tent.

According to reports coming out of North Dakota, as one man and three children were in their tent asleep at approximatey 1:10 am, a pickup truck driver lost control of his vehicle, and barreled over their tent. The four were camping at the Hahn’s Camp Grounds at Lake Metigoshe.

Two of the children, a five-year-old boy, and a 9-year-old boy were killed in the ordeal, they were pronounced dead at Saint Andrews Hospital in Bottineau. Two others in the tent, 28-year-old Juan Ruiz, and another 9-year-old were injured.

Ruiz, from El Paso, Texas, was flown to Trinity hospital in Minot with serious injuries, the 9-year-old suffered minor injuries.

The news release from the North Dakota Highway Patrol says that 30-year-old Juan Acosta, of Newburg, was driving too fast for the conditions when he lost control going around a curve. That is when he entered the camping area, ran over the tent, finally coming to a stop after hitting a tree.

There were three people in the Ford F-250 Supercab at the time of the incident. Two were uninjured, the driver suffered minor injuries. They were not wearing seat belts at the time.

Swain Benson, the Bottineau County Prosecutor said that they are determining the charges to brought against Acosta.
