Two hypothermic kayakers were fished from the waters of of Portage Lake after their kayaks overturned there on Sunday, the trooper dispatch reports.
It was at 1:08 pm that 25-year-old Stephanie Hawkins with Portage Valley Tours, contacted troopers and reported that two kayaks had overturned in the lake and two persons were floating motionless in the water.
Hawkins, and two other good Samaritans pulled the motionless men from the water and transported them to shore. Troopers report that they, along with several good Samaritans with medical knowledge, and the Girdwood Fire Department got the men from the boat and treated them for hypothermia at the scene, before transporting them to Providence Hospital for further treatment.
The two men, identified as 64-year-old Ronald Wray Stafford and 37-year-old, were overboard, and adrift for 35 minutes before being retrieved from the frigid waters of the glacial lake. Both men were wearing life preservers at the time of the incident.
