As Alaska State Trooper Jason Ball and Public Safety Technician II Shawn Olsen were out on the water performing enforcement duties near Egegik, they saw a group of people and a commotion on the beach near Coffee Point.
They went ashore and responded to the scene to find a man unconcious man laying in the sand.
Trooper Ball began CPR efforts as Olsen contacted the Patrol Vessel Stimson as well as the King Salmon Post. A small boat from the Stimson was directed to the scene as well as a helicopter from King Salmon.
After about 15 minutes, the boat from the Stimson arrived and Officer Dan Pulice joined Ball in revival efforts. After another ten minutes of CPR efforts, the man began breathing. The man was identified as 54-year-old Jose Orendez of Fallbrook, California.
Orendez was immediately transported to the Egegik airstrip and then flown to the Naknek Clinic where he was stabilized then medevaced to Anchorage.

An investigation into the incident found that Orendez and his adult son were traveling to the beach in their 12-foot Zodiac raft when the raft hung up on something and flipped and the two men were thrown into the water.
Both individuals were wearing their PFDs, the younger man made it to shore while the father was found a short time later hung up on a set net running line. He was brought to shore and that is when the group with Orendez were spotted by the Enforcement officials and they came ashore.
It was very fortunate for Orendez that Trooper Ball, Tech Olsen, and Officer Pulice came to the scene, without their efforts it is likely that Orendez would not have survived.
