SITKA, Alaska – The University of Alaska Southeast Sitka Campus has added a lifeguard training class to its summer class schedule.

The class takes place from 7-10 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and from 1-6 p.m. on Sundays, with class dates from Tuesday, May 14, through Tuesday, June 4, at the Blatchley Middle School swimming pool. In addition to earning one physical education credit, students earn an American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification that can make them eligible for hire at most community swim pools.

The American Red Cross Lifeguarding course provides entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills they need to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies. It also teaches students how to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical service (EMS) personnel can take over.

Participants must be 15 years old on or before the final scheduled class date. In addition, a swim test will be administered at the first class. The course costs $174, plus there is an additional $32 fee paid directly to instructor Jane Eidler for the textbook.
