18-year-old Savoonga resident Dinah Toolie and 27-year-old Janine Iknokinok of Unalakleet had been on a hunting trip outside of Unalakleet and were on their way back to the village when the four-wheeler they were riding ran out of gas.
The two women decided to walk back to the village, which at that time was only 1.3 miles distant. As they prepared to walk nack, Toolie picked up the rifle from the bike and accidently triggered the weapon. The shot entered the back of Iknokinok’s leg and travelled through the back of the other.
A short while later men working on a GCI tower came into contact with the two women and transported Iknokinok to the Unalakleet Clinic. Iknokinok was then tranported to Anchorage for treatment of her wounds, The wounds are reported to be serious but not life-threatening.
