Thirteen people were killed, and several others wounded including two police officers, when at least one gunman opened fire inside Washington Navy Yard building at 8:20 AM on Monday morning. The gunman has been identified.
One of the suspected shooters is dead and Washington DC police are continuing to look for two additional gunmen described as wearing military style uniforms, both men are described as being armed, one was armed with a long gun. The dead shooter has been identified as 34-year-old Texas resident Alex Alexis. It is said that he has a criminal history in that stae and is also the holder of a concealed carry permit. Authorities say he gained access to the base using someone else’s identity.
Some witnesses at the scene report that one gunman opened fire from the fourth floor, aiming down at the cafeteria on the first floor. Other witnesses report encountering a gunman on the third floor in the hallway. It is unsure at this time whether the witnesses were describing the same gunman.
Alexis is confirmed dead, and was shot after he barricaded himself in a room at the headquarters building after being engaged in a running shootout with police. There is no confirmation that more than one gunman opened fire at the shipyard, but authorities continue to search for the two additional suspected gunmen. One of the two is described as a 50-year-old black man wearing an olive drab uniform and armed with a rifle. The second suspect is described as a white man wearing a short sleeve, khaki uniform with a beret and armed with a pistol. The authorities are basing their suspicions on witness reports and surveillance videos.
Two naval officials at the Naval Sea Systems Command Headquarters, where about 3,000 people work building and maintaining Navy ships and submarines along with combat systems, earlier reported that at least six people had died. Washington DC police confirm that number at 12 at a 2 PM news conference. It was updated again later in the afternoon to thirteen.
The shooting at the shipyard caused the shutdown of the Reagan National Airport and security was subsequently beefed up at the Capitol.
Police are asking anyone with information on the two remaining suspects to call them at 202–727–9099.
