The man arrested in the shooting death of Treyvon Martin, George Zimmerman, turned himself in to authorities yesterday, and today, stood before a Judge in Seminole County.
Clad in gray prison overalls, Zimmerman spoke very little during his initial appearance in the case before the Judge Mark Herr. Judge Herr, during the proceedings assigned the case to Judge Jessica Recksiedler of the 18th Judicial Circuit Court.
Zimmerman’s lawyer, Mark O’Mara made a request that witness information be sealed in the case. Judge Herr left to Judge Jessica Recksiedler the dicision to address that motion.
Although O’Mara said earlier in the day, that he wanted his client released as soon as possible, in court, no bond was asked for or given. The issue of bond will probably not come until later when Zimmerman is arraigned next month, on May 29th. Florida law dictates that persons charged with murder must attend an Arthur hearing in order to request bail.
O’Mara has stated, in regards to release earler, “I think nobody would deny the fact if George Zimmerman is walking down the street today, he would be at risk.” O’Mara said that Zimmerman didn’t share those concerns however.
On the issue of bail, the attorney for the Martin family only ask “for justice to apply equally for all. If a judge decides (Zimmerman) has a right to bail, then that’s the system, and we’ll respect the system.”
