ANCHORAGE, ALASKA – On Monday, September 8, trained Anchorage Youth Court (AYC) teen clerks, bailiffs, attorneys and judges will present “Faces of AYC.” This special event will include a live mock sentencing and offer a rare view of the inner workings of the youth court program. Our keynote speaker will be Chief Deputy Clerk Jan Welch for the United States District Court for the District of Alaska.
Anchorage Youth Court trains Anchorage/Chugiak/Eagle River/Girdwood area youth in grades 7-12, to represent and judge their peers in actual criminal cases, providing hands-on justice for teens who have broken the law. Students train and serve as clerks, bailiffs, prosecuting and defense attorneys, as well as judges; encouraging understanding and respect for the law in a formal court setting. AYC’s after-school and summer program helps teens develop citizenship, leadership and practical skills while providing the opportunity for juvenile offenders to take responsibility and go on to positively engage in the community.
“Faces of AYC” is free to the public and will offer the opportunity for questions and answers from our trained youth court members. Join us at the Wilda Marston Theatre in the Loussac Library between 7 p.m., Monday, September 8, as students, parents, supporters and the community learn more about Anchorage Youth Court.
Refreshments and class registration for students interested in AYC Fall Classes will be available in the lobby after the presentation.
