The 2 year-old child who was struck by a stray bullet on Sunday night that was discharged from a condominium unit next door has been identified by the Anchorage Police Department. They have identified the victim as Ashton Chinnis. Ashton, the son of Anchorage Police Officer Calvin Chinnis, is still hospitalized in intensive care today. The department said that the hospital staff is guardedly optimistic about his recovery as he begins showing signs of improvement.
Police also named the man who fired the errant bullet, he was identified as 26 year-old Ronald Flannigon of Anchorage. According to reports, Flannigon was handling a weapon, when it discharged and the bullet went through the wall, striking 2 year-old Ashton in the top of the head as he lay sleeping in the neighboring unit.
Flannigon, his wife and brother in law were brought in and interviewed over the incident and later released. According to the department, there were several firearms in their residence, but no alcohol was involved.
Presently, no charges have been filed as the investigators have not finished investigating the incident. Communications with the District Attorney will not be made until that process is complete according to police spokesman David Parker.
