A two-year-old Burkesville, Kentucky toddler was shot dead by her five-year-old brother when he was playing with a .22 caliber rifle on Tuesday.
According to Cumberland County authorities, the shooting occured at appproximately 1 pm on Tuesday. Investigators say that the children’s mother had stepped outside momentarily just prior to the incident.

The toddler, who has been identified as Caroline Sparks, was taken to the Cumberland County Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Authorities were told that the weapon used to shoot the toddler was a .22 caliber Crickett rifle that the young boy had gotten for his last birthday. The mother said that the rifle was routinely kept in the corner. The family did not realize the weapon was loaded.
Although the little girl’s remains will undergo autopsy, the Cumberland County Coroner said the shooting will be ruled accidental.
This most recent shooting comes just one day after a five-year-old girl was shot and killed in the Alaskan Community of Mountain Village. In that incident, the unidentified girl was shot and killed by her eight-year-old brother. She was shot with a .22 caliber rifle as well.
Earlier this month, on April 8th, a four-year-old New Jersey boy shot and killed his six-year-old playmate outside his Toms River home. The children were playing outside when the four-year-old went inside,retrieved a .22 caliber rifle, re-emerged outside and shot the older boy in the head.
