ANCHORAGE, AK- November 2, 2015 – Open Enrollment for 2016 started Sunday, November 1, 2015. Enroll Alaska wants to remind individuals and families of the importance of updating their 2016 application to ensure accurate information is captured. Additionally, those individuals who were not enrolled in 2015 can now sign-up for a plan during open enrollment which runs from November 1, 2015 – January 31, 2016. For coverage to be in effect on January 1, 2016, individuals must enroll by December 15, 2015.
Alaskans who were enrolled in 2015 will be seeing significant changes in plan availability and designs. In addition to the rate increases, individuals may be faced with plan discontinuation, network changes, or other complicated health plan choices. The income calculation glitch Enroll Alaska uncovered (Press Release dated October 19, 2015) is still a concern for families that are enrolled or will enroll in plans through healthcare.gov. These families may not be receiving an accurate Advanced Premium Tax Credit (subsidy) due to healthcare.gov not including dependent income in a taxpayer’s total household income. This misscalculation could cause an overestimated subsidy and, if left unaddressed, could cause a tax liability when filing 2015 and/or 2016 income taxes.
