The death toll in the massive storm system that tore its way through the the central and southeastern portion of the United States has grown to 37 as the terrible storm gouged its way through a half a dozen states leaving devastation in its path.
Monday was another day of tornado related death as thunderstorms and tornadoes swept into Mississippi from its beginnings in Arkansas and Oklahoma. 12 more people were killed in that state after the storm took 15 lives in Arkansas on Sunday. Three people were confirmed dead in Alabama, two more in Iowa and another in Oklahoma. Two others were killed in Fayetteville, Tennessee when they mistakenly returned home before the storm had passed.
The storm system continued to spawn tornadoes throughout the week, Sunday’s total of 11 tornadoes was beaten on Monday with another 25 spun up by the storm. Tuesday would find at least five tornadoes spinning up in North Carolina
On the heels of the high winds and tornadoes came flooding. Flash Flooding has struck throughout the south and east. Alabama saw as much as eleven inches through Tuesday and can expect at least another two to four inches today. Florida has received as much as 20 inches by Wednesday and flooding in that state is widespread. The flooding has gotten so severe that emergency crews are unable to respond to many requests for help. In many areas boats and jetskis have been brought in from the beaches to help out.
Georgia has been warned to be on the lookout for severe thunderstorms and tornadoes as well. Tornado watches continue through the middle and southern regions of the state today.
