Alaska State Troopers recovered remains that were floating in a lake near Tyonek on Tuesday. It is suspected the remains are those of a Tyonek man who went missing last fall in the area.
Troopers responded to the village of Tyonek on the west side of Cook Inlet on Tuesday after receiving a report of a floating body in the lake there.
The remains were sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Anchorage for positive identification. But, troopers believe that the remains are those of 45-year-old Eugene Bismark of Tyonek. Bismark was reported missing on October 25th of 2013.
The cause of death was undetermined, but, nothing suspicious was observed.
Tyonek, with its population of just under 200 is located on the west side of Cook Inlet. The village was noted by explorer James Cook in 1778. The village was moved to higher ground after flooding in the 1930s.
Tyonek, at one time was a major port in Cook Inlet, and was a staging point for the Resurrection Creek gold rush in the 1880s, but went into decline after the founding of Anchorage in 1915.
