At approximately 4:23 pm on Sunday afternoon, Alaska State Troopers observed and attempted to pull over a tan Dodge SUV for driving 89 mph in a 55 mph highway Safety Corridor at Mile 8 of the Knik-Goose Bay Road. The driver failed to stop for the officers.
The driver, who was later identified as 27-year-old Heman Matthews, fled troopers, taking them on a short chase of speeds up to 100 mph. During the chase, it was reported by troopers that Matthews was passing vehicles on a double yellow corner as he was being pursued.
Matthews would come to a stop on South Hallie Drive. But, he immediately fled the scene on foot. A 25-year-old passenger in his vehicle was detained for a short time until he could be interviewed.
A K9 team was called in to locate Matthews and he was found a short distance away. When contacted, Matthews told troopers that he wasn’t driving and also gave troopers a false name.
Matthews was arrested and charged with Failure to Stop at the Direction of a Peace Officer, Reckless Driving, Driving with License Revoked, and False Information. He was also brought in on a $1,500 warrant.
Matthews’ vehicle was impounded for further investigation.
