Chugach Powder Guides called in to the Soldotna Public Safety Communications Center late on Sunday afternoon to report the death of one of their clients in a glacier calving accident at the head of Lake George according to the trooper dispatch.
It was at 5:02 pm that a call went in to troopers from the guiding service reporting the death of 28-year-old Italian citizen Alexander Hellweger after a trip to the Lake George Glacier.
It was reported that the deceased was part of an eight-person party on vacation from belgium and Italy. The guiding company had taken seven of the party into the back country to take part in heli-skiing. At the end of the day, before traveling back to Girdwood, the Chugach Powder Guide helicopter took the group to the Lake George Glacier for some up close glacier viewing.
While viewing the glacier up close, a portion of the glacier calved off, fell and crushed Hellweger at the location.
According to the trooper dispatch, continued ice calving and diminishing daylight prevented the retrieval of Hellweger’s remains. Troopers and rescuers have made arraignments to retrieve the body at a later date.
Hellweger’s next of kin were notified of his demise.
