(JUNEAU, Alaska) – The Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (ADOT&PF) Safe Routes to School program invites schools statewide to participate in this year’s National Bike to School Day. Students in communities across the nation will bike to school on Wednesday, May 6, 2015.

Bike to School Day is part of the celebration of National Bike Month. The event offers the opportunity for students to join together on a single day, to promote fun and healthy physical activities and practice safety as they bike and walk in their communities.

ADOT&PF reminds schools in Alaska that it’s not too late to sign up to participate. So far, 16 schools in Alaska have registered to participate in 2015. Last year, 68 schools in 4 cities joined the national event.

Bike to School Day is promoted by the Alaska Safe Routes to School program as a way to educate parents and children about how to bike and walk safely in traffic. These skills can be practiced and help improve safety for all. Most importantly, it’s fun!
