It was on Friday that a caller reported to troopers that a man and woman were missing from a campsite located near mile 79 of the Denali Highway.

When troopers responded to the area, they “found evidence suggesting an altercation involving gunfire associated with their vehicle and camper trailer,” the trooper dispatch reported.

Upon the discovery of that evidence, the Alaska Bureau of Investigation responded to the scene and took responsibility for the investigation.

Alaska State Trooper aircraft and Wilderness Search and Rescue conducted an exhaustive search of the area with no results.

Then, at approximately 4 pm on Sunday, “troopers heard noises coming from a dilapidated trailer in the area and evidence outside associated with the missing couple,” they report. A perimeter was set up and troopers attempted to communicate with the occupants of the trailer, but gained no results.

The Northern Special Emergency Reaction Team was called up and responded to the scene. Ten trooper cars and an armored vehicle and an incident command vehicle sped to the scene 14 miles tot he west of the Alpine Creek Lodge.

.After the Northern SERT team also received negative results to their attempts at contact, entry was made into the trailer. A male and female were discovered deceased inside.

Investigators continue their investigation at the scene on Monday morning attempting to discern the circumstances surrounding the victim’s deaths. The remains of the two have been sent to the State Medical Examiner’s office in Anchorage for autopsies and positive identification.
