On Thursday morning, a residential fire broke out in the community of Chevak resulting in injuries and one fatality it was reported yesterday.
Alaska State troopers were notified of a fire burning in Chevak, a small community near Hooper Bay in Southwest Alaska. It was reported at 10:48 am, that people from the home were being assisted out of the structure fire.
“One adult female was unresponsive after being removed from the home,” it was reported in the trooper dispatch. Efforts to resuscitate the woman, identified as 39-year-old Denise Jones, failed and she was subsequently declared deceased.
Two children, whose identities were not revealed, also suffered injuries in the fire. One child was medevaced to Bethel for treatment, while the other was medevaced to Anchorage. The current status of the two children is unknown at this time.
Alaska State Troopers, as well as the State Fire Marshal’s office responded to the community to investigate the cause and circumstances off the fire.
The remains of Denise Jones were sent to the State Medical Examiner’s office for autopsy. Next of kin were notified of her passing.
The investigation into the fire is continuing.
