JUNEAU, Alaska— AVTEC, Alaska’s Institute of Technology, will train seven crewmembers of the U.S. Coast Guard Icebreaker Healy. Crewmembers will participate in ice navigation training at the AVTEC Maritime Training Center in Seward, Alaska. AVTEC’s ice navigation course was the first of its kind in the nation and the only one with U.S. Coast Guard approval.
“Alaska’s presence in the Arctic is stronger and safer thanks to AVTEC’s world class maritime training,” said Labor Commissioner Heidi Drygas. “We’re proud to assist the U.S. Coast Guard by providing the training they need to operate safely.”
Junior officers from Icebreaker Healy will enroll in the ice navigation course at AVTEC this week. The course will focus on mission critical ice navigation topics such as being beset in ice, backing and ramming, entering ice, and route finding. Most of the training will be done utilizing AVTEC’s Kongsberg Full Mission Bridge Simulator.[xyz-ihs snippet=”Adsense-responsive”]
