Contact with an Anchorage man for parking in a handicapped parking space without handicapped plates or placard quickly escalated into much more serious charges earlier this month and concluded with his arrest on Saturday APD announced on Monday.

On July 7th, an APD patrol officer, while on patrol in the area of Wendy’s parking lot on 5th Avenue spotted a black Honda Accord parked in a handicap space, and did not have handicap plates or placard in place on the vehicle, and so, made contact with the driver.

The driver, later identified as 26-year-old Christian A Young, rummaged around after being asked for his driver’s license by the officer. While he rummaged, Young released the emergency brake and the vehicle began to roll backward.

The officer ordered Young to stop his vehicle as she thought that his vehicle was about to collide with her patrol vehicle. Instead of bringing his vehicle to a stop, Young put the vehicle in gear and ran over the sidewalk as the officer jumped out of the way to avoid being hit.

Young continued toward Fifth Avenue by driving the wrong way through the drive-thru. He was not apprehended at that time.

As a result of the incident, Young, who is on probation for Robbery II, had a felony arrest warrant issued on charges of Eluding I, Fail to Stop, Reckless Driving, and Violation of Conditions of Release.

APD asked for information concerning Young’s whereabouts after the July 7th incident.

On Saturday afternoon APD received a tip from a caller reporting that Young was seen at Fred Meyers on Dimond Boulevard. When officers arrived at the scene, the caller reported that Young had gone into the restroom at the store.

Officers made contact with Young, but instead of giving up, Young fled down the hallway and through a closed checkout lane. In the lane, Young shoved a shopping cart into the pursuing officer’s way but the officer shoved the cart out of the way and dove towards the fleeing suspect, tackling him to the ground. During the takedown, Young elbowed the officer in the face causing a bleeding injury to the officer’s eyebrow, but the officer successfully handcuffed Young and took him into custody.

“He was arrested and remanded at the Anchorage Jail on his existing warrants.  He was additionally charged with Resisting Arrest and Assault on a Police Officer.” APD reported.

The officer was treated at a local hospital for his injury.
