KODIAK, Alaska — The Coast Guard responded to a mayday call from the 32-foot fishing vessel Cyclone crew about 20 miles southeast of Kodiak Friday.

Coast Guard Sector Anchorage watchstanders received a mayday call from a Cyclone crewmember at about 7:15 a.m. over VHF-FM channel 16 reporting the Cyclone was sinking. The watchstanders immediately issued an urgent marine information broadcast notice to all mariners in the area to assist the Cyclone crew.

The good Samaritan vessel Glacier and crew were able to pull the three Cyclone crew from the water at about 7:30 a.m.

The Glacier crew will take the three rescued crewmembers to Kodiak. All crewmembers reported to be in good condition.

The weather at the time of the incident was winds at 40 mph with a gale warning in effect, seas up to 20-feet, a water temperature of 37 degrees, an air temperature of 28 degrees and visibility of four miles.

Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment Kodiak and Sector Anchorage personnel will investigate the cause of the sinking.

“Through expert coordination with our watchstanders and the good Samaritans, these three people were rescued quickly,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Fredery Araujo, Sector Anchorage operations coordinator. “These crewmembers are safe due to having the appropriate safety equipment, such as survival suits, an emergency indicating radio beacon and a hand-held radio, easily accessible along with the voluntary assistance of the fishing vessel Glacier crew. The assistance of good Samaritans is key in the harsh Alaskan elements.”

Safety equipment is required to be on board a fishing vessel in accordance with 46 Code of Federal Regulations 25.01-1(a).
