According to the Alaska State troopers, they received a multiple vehicle crash report at 1:21 AM Wednesday morning.
That crash that occurred early this morning, claimed the life of 19-year-old Ashley Hecox of Nenana.
The Alaska state trooper investigation into the incident revealed that Hecox was driving her 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt southbound on the Parks Highway near milepost 286.5, when she encountered a moose crossing the highway from her left to her right.
Hecox collided with the moose. After hitting the animal, Hecox’s vehicle crossed the centerline and struck the last two axles of a tractor pulling two trailers headed northbound on Highway towards Fairbanks. the Horizon Lines tractor-trailer was driven by 46-year-old Robert Schmitt of Eagle River.

The impact of the crash caused her vehicle to spin and skid to a stop, coming to a rest of the northbound shoulder of the highway. Hecox was not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the accident.
Another tractor-trailer northbound on Highway was damaged by debris from the accident. that tractor-trailer was operating for Carlile Transportation, and driven by 42-year-old Troy Call of Chugach.
Neither of the tractor-trailer operators were injured in the accident.
Department of Transportation Commercial Vehicle Enforcement and Nenana Patrol assisted the Alaska State troopers in the investigation.
Hecox’s remains have been sent to the state Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy.
Hecox’s next of kin have been notified, and the investigation into the incident is continuing.
