On Tuesday, 29-year-old Jason Echeverri of Anchorage crossed the border into Canada. But, was turned around by the Canadian officials at Beaver Creek.
Echeverri turned around and attempted re-entry into Alaska. U.S. Customs officials at the Alcan Port of Entry did a quick query on Echeverri and found that he was on Felony probation and was not to leave the state of Alaska. His original conviction was Felony Theft II from 2010. The Alaska State Troopers were called at 10:30 am and they requested that border officials hold Echerri until the troopers come and take custody of him.

U.S. Custom Agents detained Echeverri and awaited Alaska State Troopers for transport. But, the Customs officials would only have custody of Echeverri for a few short hours. While officials were assisting Echeverri after using the restroom facilities, Echeverri overpowered the officials in the hallway, escaped from the facility and ran up a steep hill nearby. Officers pursued Echeverri up the hill, but by the time they got to the top, Echeverri had already gone down the other side. Echeverri ran back to the facility and recovered the keys to his sedan and escaped across the border and down the highway into Canada.
Canadian Mounted Police attempted to apprehend Echeverri but he eluded them, Mounties pursued Echeverri for several miles down the highway. Echeverri put distance between himself and the Mounties however and it wasn’t until he stopped for gas, near Kluane Lake at a lodge at Destruction Bay well into the Yukon Territory of Canada, that Mounties began to close in on him.
The lodgeowner that sold Echeverri gas didn’t see anything unusual about Echeverri and told reporters he didn’t even seem agitated or let on he was being pursued by authorities.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police radioed ahead and had a roadblock with spike strips set up to stop Echeverri. But, when Echeverri encountered the roadblock, he simply drove over the spike strips and continued down the highway with all of his tires flattened. He continued with his vehicle in that condition for another 18.5 miles, before abandoning his vehicle and fleeing into the woods on foot.
RCMP continued pursuit of Echeverri with a RCMP aircraft and an Emergency Response Team. About eight homes were evacuated in the area.
It wasn’t until after 9 pm that Echeverri was located at the Arctic Institute Research building near Kluane Lake and placed under arrest.
Echeverri was charged with Dangerous Driving, Evading an Officer, and Breaking and Entering. Echeverri is due in Canadian Court next week.
Echevarri has a lengthy criminal history in the U.S. He now also faces charges in Alaska for Felony Escape, Resisting Arrest, and Assaulting a Police Officer. The charges have been forwarded to the District Attormey’s office.
