Alaska State Troopers responded to Matanuska Lake in Palmer at :06 pm on Saturday to a report of CPR being performed on a person at the popular swimming spot.

According to the trooper dispatch, 23-year-old James Evangelestomp was “swimming at the lake when he submerged under the water for an unknown reason and did not resurface.”
There are reports that Evangelestomp had gotten entangled under the surface at the lake.
Evangelestomp was transported to Mat-Su Regional Hospital by Mat-Su Borough EMS where he was pronounced deceased. Evangelestomp’s family was at the scene.
No foul play is suspected in Evangelestomp’s death.
