Saying that the most important factor in the sentencing of Nyrobbie Chandler was he needed "to be removed from society to protect the public," Superior Court Judge Douglas Blankenship gave Kaylynn's murderer 70 years in prison this week.,
During the hearing, Chandler’s mother testified, during her testimony, Chandler stood and reached out to her before being told to sit back down.
Chandler’s defense attorney, Robert Noreen, told the court of Chandler’s remorse and related to the court how Chandler had asked for flowers being placed on Bishop’s makeshift grave that he had dug for her behind an abandoned vehicle on the Richardson Highway. The defense also spoke of Chandler’s devotion and dependence on Bishop.
But the prosecution painted a much different picture of Chandler and District Attorney Andrew Baldock told of lack of remorese as he explained how Chandler hocked the ring that he had given to Bishop after her death and impersonated Bishop in an attempt to collect the security deposit that Bishop had put down on an apartment as she tried to severe their relationship.
Immediately after killing Bishop and disposing of her remains in a shallow grave, Chandler created a scheme to keep his deed secret. Chandler would use Bishop’s phone to send texts to her places of employment saying that she was headed out of town and would not be to work, as well as to an apartment owner requesting a refund on an apartment deposit.
Chandler told a tale of Bishop returning home late from work and immediately leaving again after receiving a call in the four interviews that police conducted with him in the months after Bishop’s death. Investigators pointed out that there was no evidence of any calls coming in to Bishop’s cell during that period.
After hearing statements from the family of his victim as well as Chandler’s mother, a psychologist, the prosecution, and the court appointed defense lawyer, Judge Blankenship gave a sentence five years shy of the 75 years that the prosecution had asked the court for.
When Blankenship’s sentence was handed down, Chandler showed no reaction.
