A commercial vehicle, owned by AIMM Technologies, was hauling drilling mud on Homer's East End Road when it overturned as it was traveling westbound toward Homer on Wednesday morning.
The driver of the vehicle, 29-year-old Soldotna resident Trevor Cunningham was ejected from the vehicle and landed some distance from the truck. Cunningham was transported to South Peninsula Hospital in Homer. But, Cunningham succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
When the truck, hauling drilling mud from Buccaneer Energy’s West Eagle drilling site, overturned, the tank containing drilling mud separated from the frame of the vehicle.
Some of that mud that was being hauled was spilled at the scene over an area of approximately 600 square feet. Kachemak Emergency Services set out boom to contain the spill as a precaution. Alaska’s Department of Environmental Conservation was notified of the spill.
Commercial Vehicle Enforcement was also notified of the accident and is responding to the scene. The Bureau of Highway Patrol responded to the accident and assumed responsibility at the scene.
The investigation into the cause of the accident is continuing.
Cunningham’s next of kin has been notified.
