In January 2012, the Anchorage Police Department kicked off their “0 for ‘12†campaign for OUI related fatalities. Our goal is through aggressive OUI enforcement to reduce Anchorage’s OUI fatalities to zero this year.
The statistics for the first quarter of 2012 have been compiled and we have had NO OUI related fatalities thus far this year. Between January 31 and March 31 APD arrested 447 drivers for OUI. This is in large part due to the citizens of Anchorage who call in and report drivers they believe may be impaired.
In 2011, nearly 45% of the arrests made in relation to OUI offenses were made as a direct result of citizens calling to report impaired drivers. Without the assistance of its citizens, the Anchorage Police Department could not be as proactive in arresting these offenders. We want to continue to encourage citizens to Report Every Distracted Driver Immediately (REDDI) by calling 911 when they see a vehicle driving recklessly; it could be the difference between life and death.
Since 2002, the department has made significant improvement in reducing the number of fatalities on Anchorage’s road and we believe it is a direct result of citizens and police working together to stop impaired drivers.
