On Wednesday evening the Village Police Officer in the community of Ambler was called to respond to a report of a woman yelling for help from her porch.
When the VPO arrived at the scene at 7:30 pm, he found a 50-year-old woman on her hands and knees hollering for help. The woman had her foot jammed in a door that was bent and locked. The Officer came to the woman’s aid and attempted to free her foot from the door. As he was doing so, a man came out of the house and attacked the officer as he was aiding the woman.
During the struggle with the man, identified as 51-year-old John Kelly of Ambler, the officer sustained injuries to his wrists. Ultimately, the VPO was able to subdue and arrest Kelly.
Kelly was transported to the Ambler holding cell, once he was placed in the holding cell, Kelly attempted to urinate on the officer.
Alaska State Troopers and an Arctic Northwest Arctic Borough Village Public Safety Officer investigated the incident.
Kelly was transported to the Kotzebue Regional Jail Facility where he was remanded until arraignment on charges of Assault IV DV x2, Assault IV on an Officver, Resisting Arrest, and Harassment I.
