American Samoan Woman Sentenced for 200 False Tax Returns

An American-Samoan woman living in Anchorage was sentenced in federal court for filing fraudulent tax returns on Tuesday, U.S. Attorney Bryan Schroder revealed.

54-year-old Corina F. Ifopo was sentenced to two years in prison followed by three years of supervised release by Chief U.S. District Judge Timothy M. Burgess on Tuesday following her guilty plea on December 12th, 2017.

It was shown in court that Ifopo had filed approximately 200 fraudulent claims with the IRS totaling over $1 million for residents in American Samoa beginning in May 2014 and continuing to February 2016.

In those false tax returns, Ifopo falsely claimed that individuals in the returns lived in the U.S. and were owed refunds. Those returns claimed false dependents, withholdings and claimed income credits that were not applicable. She used fictional post office boxes and funneled the funds through accounts linked to herself, the prosecutors said in court.[xyz-ihs snippet=”Adsense-responsive”]
