Anchorage Doctor Remains in Jail on SAM Charges

Anchorage doctor, 67-year-old Clifford Merchant remains in jail on Monday after his arraignment on Sunday. His bail is set at $500,000.

Merchant was arrested at the International airport on Saturday, he had reservations to leave the state.

Merchant, the majority owner of First Care Medical Centers LLC and a contract doctor in the Providence Alaska Medical Center’s emergency room, is accused of 14 counts of Sexual Abuse of a Minor and one count of Attempted Sexual Abuse of a Minor.

According to the multi-count indictment, Merchant abused three girls between 2001 and 2013. A twelve-year-old girl brought to light the abuses in July of this year.

According to court documents, Merchant abused the three girls in his home, in his airplane as well as his cabin in Skwentna. All of the girls were under the age of 13 when the abuses occurred.

Providence reports that they are cooperating fully in the investigation and that Merchant’s doctor’s privileges have been suspended.
