After deliberating for only an hour, an Anchorage Jury found 22-year-old Boonchan Yang, also known as “Chowmein,” Guilty of two counts of drug trafficking, acting U.S. Attorney Kevin Feldis announced in a press release on Wednesday.
Yang was convicted of his drug distribution activities that took place in June and October of 2014.
It was on June 19th, that Yang set up a drug deal with an informant. Text messages and recordings of telephones the arrangements were shown and played in court of a deal made for a half ounce of methamphetamine and an AK-47. Law enforcement would videotape the actual deal when it was carried out.
Then, on October 3rd, Yang would again run into the law while carrying out his drug activities. On that day, Yang brought an ounce of methamphetamine to an Anchorage parking lot with the intentions of selling it. When confronted by law enforcement that day, Yang attempted to hide the meth in the vehicle, but was unsuccessful. Investigators would find the ounce of meth as well as “dime baggies,” and a digital scale.
The video played for the jury showing the actual deal being carried out in June served to solidly convince the jury of Yang’s crimes and that was seen by the very short deliberation time before conviction.
At sentencing, Yang faces a minimum sentence of five years on each count and a statutory maximum of 40 years. Judge Russel Holland set sentencing for July 7.
