The Arizona woman who was detained nine days ago in Mexico and thrown into prison there on drug smuggling charges, has been released and re-united with her family late Thursday night.
After Mexican officials reviewed the surveillance video of her and her husband boarding the passenger bus at the bus station as they prepared to return home to Arizona, it was determined that they could not have brought the packages of marijuana that was found under her seat.

Video showed Yanira Maldonado and her husband boarding the bus with her purse, water bottles and some blankets. 12 pounds of marijuana was allegedly found under her seat, suspended there by hooks.
Maldonado, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Mexico had gone back to Mexico to attend the funeral of an aunt and was returning home when she was detained on May 22nd. The mother of seven was arrested by soldiers at a checkpoint about 170 miles from the border.
Those soldiers, a lieutenant, a private and a sergeant were to appear in court on Wednesday in connection with the case but did not appear. They claimed to have found the drugs under seat number 39, which was Mandonado’s seat and another under seat 42. There were a total of about forty people on the bus at the time. It was pointed out that one man fled during the inspection that took place. It is surmised that he may have been the true owner of the marijuana. He had been seated behind Maldonado and her husband.
It was after the viewing of the video that a judge in the case decided to release Maldonado and to drop all charges against her.
Maldonado and her husband crossed back into U.S. territory through an Arizona checkpoint at shortly after midnight.
