While speaking at the Alaska Federation of Natives Convention in Fairbanks on Thursday, Alaska's Governor Sean Parnell announced a statewide education initiative that would would digitally link teachers, courses and students across the state. The governor also awarded the Shirley Demientieff Award, and announced the state's a proposal to enter into agreements with tribal courts.
The National Park Service is asking hikers and bikers to stay away from the work-zone on the Denali Park Road at mile 37 where a massive landslide has covered the road to depths of approximately 35 feet deep due to the instability of the slope.
George Schaller has studied gorillas in Rwanda, lions on the Serengeti, pandas in China, antelope in Tibet, and many other animals in wild places around the planet, but he thinks the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is unique among them. He visited there in 2006 for the first time in half a century.
