The National Park Service is asking hikers and bikers to stay away from the work-zone on the Denali Park Road at mile 37 where a massive landslide has covered the road to depths of approximately 35 feet deep due to the instability of the slope.
According to the Denali Park Spokesperson, Kris Fister, the landslide was discovered on Wednesday and park staff assessed the slide, which covered approximately 200 feet of the roadway, on Thursday.
Road crews began the long task of unburying the road on Friday, clearing the debris that came down from about 500 feet above the road. Work will continue seven days a week as crews take advantage of the mild weather that is occurring in central Alaska. Fister says that the slide consists of approximately 30,000 yards of rock and soil.
The road remains open to the Teklanika rest area about thirty miles in and operating hours of the Murie Science and Learning Center has not been affected.
