Burst Natural Gasline Closes School, Businesses in Ninilchik

A burst natural gas line caused the evacuation of the school in Ninilchik as well as a closure on the Sterling Highway on Tuesday. Image-Google Maps

The trooper dispatch reported on Tuesday that the Soldotna Communication Center received a report of a residential natural gas line leak had occurred near mile 136 of the Sterling Highway in Ninilchik.

The report of the burst to gas line resulted in the evacuation of several businesses in the community as well as the local school. The highway was also closed as a precautionary measure.

The Ninilchik Emergency Services was able to locate the ruptured line and seal it off. ENSTAR natural gas then responded to the scene to permanently repair the line.

The evacuation notices and the road closure were lifted at 2:56 PM, it was reported by troopers.

There were no additional damages reported nor were there any injuries in the incident.
