New Image of Comet ISON

By European Southern Observatory on Nov 18, 2013   Science/Education

This new view of Comet C/2012 S1 (ISON) was taken with the TRAPPIST national telescope at ESO's La Silla Observatory on the morning of Friday 15 November 2013. Comet ISON was first spotted in our skies in September 2012, and will make its closest approach to the Sun in late November 2013.

Dusty Surprise Around Giant Black Hole

By European Southern Observatory on Jun 20, 2013   Science/Education

Over the last twenty years, astronomers have found that almost all galaxies have a huge black hole at their centre. Some of these black holes are growing by drawing in matter from their surroundings, creating in the process the most energetic objects in the Universe: active galactic nuclei (AGN).

Orion's Hidden Fiery Ribbon

By European Southern Observatory on May 15, 2013   Science/Education

Clouds of gas and interstellar dust are the raw materials from which stars are made. But these tiny dust grains block our view of what lies within and behind the clouds — at least at visible wavelengths — making it difficult to observe the processes of star formation.

An Anarchic Region of Star Formation

By European Southern Observatory on May 2, 2013   Science/Education

The Danish 1.54-metre telescope located at ESO’s La Silla Observatory in Chile has captured a striking image of NGC 6559, an object that showcases the anarchy that reigns when stars form inside an interstellar cloud.
