A California man and his son have been arrested in Stockton after the two, along with two priests, abducted and conducted an exorcism on the man's ex-wife this weekend.
42-year-old Jose Magana-Farias and his son 20-year-old Victor Farias are in a San Joaquin county jail after the woman’s roommate alerted Sheriff’s deputies to the forceable abduction that took place in a Walmart parking lot on Saturday. The man convinced the unidentified ex-wife that they should talk on the premise of patching up their failed marriage that ended over a year ago.
Instead, the woman was loaded into a vehicle and would undergo a ritual exorcism because her ex-husband believed that behavioral and personality changes that the woman had undergone as of late were signs that she was possessed by a demon. Two priests assisted in carrying out the archaic ritual.
The woman had been visiting her former home and staying to visit her children for weeks at a time prior to this weekend’s incident according to neighbors.
The San Joaquin sheriff’s department say that the woman was doused with sacred oil during the religious ceremony carried out by the priests. Authorities say the woman was unharmed in the religious ceremony.
The two defendants are due in court on Wednesday to answer to charges of kidnapping and false imprisonment. The father was also detained on orders from U.S. Border Patrol on an unrelated issue.
The priests involved in the incident were not charged.
