Governor Declares Disaster for Storm Ravaged Western Alaska

One week after a series of four storms battered western Alaska with hurricane force winds, Alaska's Governor Parnell made a verbal declaration of a state disaster this Saturday for affected communities in the Northwest Arctic Borough, Bering Straits Regional Education Attendance Area, and the Lower Yukon.

Alaska's Governor Refuses to Expand Medicaid

Despite urging from Democratic lawmakers as well as the Alaska Federation of Natives, the Alaska Chamber, and the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce, Alaska's Governor Parnell has decided against the expansion of Medicaid that would cover approximately 41,500 additional uninsured Alaskans.

Governor Parnell Names Joe Balash as DNR Commissioner

The governor's office announced that Alaska's Governor Parnell has appointed Joe Balash as commissioner of the Department of Natural Resources. Balash has been the acting commisioner of the DNR since former commissioner Dan Sullivan stepped down in September to pursue a seat in the U.S. Senate in the 2014 Senate race.
