Cessna Crashes North of Gustavus, Coast Guard Retrieves Pilot and Passenger

astcgA Cessna 180 was practicing touch and gos on a remote gravel bar 23 miles north of Gustavus on Wednesday evening when the aircraft hit a dip on the gravel bar and the aircraft suffered a prop strike, flipping the aircraft over.

Ketchikan State Troopers received a call from the International Rescue Coordination Center reporting an SOS spot beacon emitting from the area north of Gustavus at 7:18 pm on Wednesday evening. Ketchikan troopers contacted the U.S. Coast Guard informing them of the beacon. In response, the Coast Guard launched a helicopter to the scene to conduct a search.

When the Coast Guard arrived on scene, they located the aircraft and both men that had been on board.

USCG reported that both men, 34-year-old pilot, Justin Chaput, and 67-year-old Eugene Chaput were uninjured. Both men were transported back to Juneau by chopper.

The aircraft suffered damage in the crash.
