Saying that Charles Manson has made no efforts to rehabilitate himself, Manson's parole board denied him parole for the 12th time.
The now 77-year-old Manson, convicted of murdering actress Sharon Tate and four others in 1969, as well as Leno and Rosemary LaBianca, true to form, did not even attend his hearing. He has not attended a parole hearing since 1997.
California Department of Corrections Spokeswoman, Terry Thornton described Manson as a less than model inmate, saying he has violated several rules since his last parole hearing five years ago. She said that he has been caught twice since that time with a contrband cell phone, that he used to message and talk to people in several locations, including British Columbia, Florida, New Jersey, and California. Thornton did not elaborate on how he came into possession of cell phones.
He has also threatened a Peace Officer and was also caught with a weapon.
His parole hearing was attended by among others, the commissioner, deputy commissioner, family members of his victims and attoreys for the victim’s famillies as well as his own lawyer.
The board set his next parole hearing for 15 years from now, he will be 92 by then. 15 years is the maximum time allowed between hearings.
Originally, Manson was sentenced to death for his part in the grisly slayings, but the sentence was changed in 1977 to life with the possibility of parole. It was considered at the time that the death penalty was unconstitutional.
