January 25, 2012, Juneau, Alaska – Governor Sean Parnell announced today that at least 100 communities across Alaska will participate in “Choose Respect” events on March 29. In 2010, Governor Parnell issued a challenge for Alaskans to stand up and speak out and “Choose Respect” as part of his statewide initiative to end the epidemic of domestic violence and sexual assault.

“I am extremely proud of the many Alaskans who are standing up for their fellow Alaskans and our future,” Governor Parnell said. “Together, we are sending a strong message: We value every Alaskan. We choose respect to be role models so our boys and girls might know how to live. We choose respect so we can send a message of hope and healing to victims and survivors. And we choose respect that those who would control and harm others might change their ways or be held accountable.”

Events ranging from marches, rallies, candlelight vigils, and potlucks are planned in communities from Anaktuvik Pass to St. Paul, and from Eagle to Hooper Bay, and from Chignik Lake to Ketchikan, and many points in between. This is the third annual “Choose Respect” rally day. In 2010, 18 Alaska communities participated. In 2011, 64 Alaska communities participated, and in 2012 at least 100 Alaska communities will participate.
