A Kodiak woman, out in remote Saltery Cove on Kodiak Island was injured while riding ATVs in the area on Friday.

Because of the remote location of the accident, the U.S. Coast Guard was called in to assist with the 50-year-old woman. The Duty Flight Surgeon recommended that the woman be flown out of the location, and so a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter was launched to the scene.

“Due to the nature of the injuries and the remote location of the accident the safest and most effective way to transport this survivor was using a Coast Guard helicopter,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Justin Monk, an aviation survival technician at Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak. “Our continuous training prepares us to safely and effectively transport those in need out of the harsh Alaskan environment, whether at sea or on land.”

The woman was transported by chopper to the Kodiak Municipal Airport from Saltery Cove where Emergency Personnel were waiting to transport her to Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center.
