KODIAK, Alaska — The Coast Guard medevaced a man from a fishing vessel approximately 65 miles east of Kodiak, Monday.
An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Kodiak hoisted the 38-year-old man, who was suffering symptoms of a heart attack, and transported him to Air Station Kodiak where he was placed in the care of awaiting EMS. He was taken to Kodiak Providence Hospital.
Coast Guard watchstanders in the 17th District Command Center in Juneau received a request for the medevac at about 9 p.m. from the master of the 49-foot longline fishing vessel Resurrection.
The aircrew launched from the air station, arrived on scene and lowered a rescue swimmer with a rescue basket before hoisting the man to the helicopter.
“We sent a health technician to supplement the in-flight care, along with our standard aircrew members,” said Lt. Cmdr. Orion Bloom, search and rescue mission coordinator for the case. “When we know that a survivor is experiencing symptoms that might benefit from a level of care beyond what our rescue swimmers are trained to provide, we do our best to provide that higher level of care. We wish this man a swift recovery.”
