KODIAK, Alaska — Two Coast Guard units are responding to a report of a 78-foot passenger vessel, Northern Song, grounding in Deep Cove on Baranof Island with 11 people aboard Friday.
Coast Guard District 17 watchstanders received a VHF-FM channel 16 call at about 4:20 a.m., from the master of the Northern Song stating his vessel went aground on the southeast side of Baranof Island. The 11 passengers were donning their survival suits and planned to take the vessel’s small inflatable raft to shore.
The watchstanders directed the launch of a Coast Guard Air Station Sitka MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew. The Coast Guard Cutter Naushon and crew are also en route to the area to render assistance.
The Northern Song is homeported in Petersburg.
The weather at the time of the incident was reportedly light rain, an air temperature of 55 degrees, a light southeast wind and 10 miles of visibility.
