JUNEAU, Alaska— A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter aircrew and a Temsco aircrew rescued four people after their Cessna 180 aircraft crashed in Lynn Canal, near Juneau, Alaska, Wednesday.
The Coast Guard aircrew transported three Cessna passengers to the Juneau airport where emergency medical services transported them to Bartlett Regional Hospital. The Temsco aircrew transported one Cessna passenger to Bartlett.
The Federal Aviation Administration received a mayday call from the crew of the Cessna reporting their engine died while transiting from Juneau to Haines. Coast Guard Sector Juneau watchstanders diverted a Station Juneau 45-foot Response boat-medium and requested the launch of an Air Station Sitka Jayhawk.
“The pilot made an immediate mayday call which enabled a quick response by emergency assets,” said Scott Giard, a command duty officer at Sector Juneau. “A mayday call should include your name, position, nature of distress and the number of people on board.”
