JUNEAU, Alaska — A Coast Guard Station Ketchikan boatcrew towed a disabled vessel near Earnest Sound, north of Ketchikan, to safety Monday.
The 45-foot Response Boat – Medium crew towed the disabled 30-foot recreational vessel with one person aboard 40 miles to Knudson Cove Marina in Ketchikan.
Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Juneau received notification through Station Ketchikan of a recreational vessel that lost its steering capabilities while transiting through a remote area near Earnest Sound Sunday night. Watchstanders issued a marine assistance request broadcast and directed Station Ketchikan to launch the boatcrew.
“The boater had proper safety gear such as a personal floatation device, signaling flares and a cell phone with full battery,” said Lt. j.g. Thomas Kennedy, command duty officer for Sector Juneau. “He was able to contact the Coast Guard on VHF radio channel 16 once his boat lost steering and was prepared to maintain communications with Sector Juneau until help arrived on scene.”
