An investigation into the incident found that Letendre had run out of gas at the top of Hatcher Pass Road and had attempted to coast his out-of-gas vehicle down the gravel road to the Palmer Fishhook.
He made it from the summit of Hatcher Pass Raod to about mile .2, when the vehicle slid on the loose gravel of the road and the vehicle left the road at a curve. The vehicle rolled several times and came to rest approximately 200 feet down an embankment.
Letendre was cited for Failure to Exercise Due Caution to Avoid a Collision, Coasting, and No Proof of Insurance.
The Alaska State Parks Department also issued a summons to Letendre for Disturbance of Natural Resources.
The vehicle was a total loss.
