A 14-year-old boy is in jail and being held without bail on Wednesday after the body of a 24-year-old teacher from Danvers High School in Essex County, Massachusetts was found in the woods shortly after midnight early this morning.
The search for the math teacher, Colleen Ritzer, began after she did not return home after teaching on Tuesday night and was not answering her cell phone. She was reported as missing at 11:20 pm last night. Police first checked the high school where Ritzer worked and found blood in the second-floor bathroom of the school. The search for the teacher then began in ernest, and a short time later, Ritzer’s body was found by police in the woods behind the school.
Philip D. Chism was also reported missing after he did not return home from school on Tuesday. A short time after the teacher was discovered beaten and dead in the woods, Chism was located by Topsfield police as he was walking down Route 1 a few miles from the school. A report of a person walking down the busy road tipped police. 14-year-old Chism was arrested and charged with Ritzer’s death after interviewing him and viewing the surveillance videos from the school. Chism was arraigned in Salem District Court as an adult on the charges today and is being held without bail..
Police have not released any information as to the motive for the killing and have not provided the media with the details on how she was killed as yet.
Danver Public Schools were closed today due to the investigation.
