According to the Alaska Department of Corrections, Israel Keyes, the serial killer who confessed to the killing of Samantha Koenig and Vermont couple William and Lorraine Carter as well as others, killed himself with a razor that was mistakenly given to him and then not retrieved.
Keyes was found in his bloody cell with lacerations to his left wrist as well as noosed with a bedsheet around his neck and tied to his right foot behind him. Keyes was found in his segregation cell by a guard shortly after lights came on at 6 am on December 2nd, 2012 when the guard observed blood on the floor of Keye’s cell.
He was observed alive the night before at shortly after ten in the evening. Check were made through the night, but those were rudimentary checks observing that Keyes was present in his cell.
Keyes had been placed in segregation after an investigation found that he had in his possession, a modified paperclip fashioned to be an improvised handcuff key. This is after he was already under close watch after his May escape attempt while in court. In that incident, Keyes jumped over the low barrier in the court room after somehow releasing himself from ankle restraints.
The father of Samantha Koenig, James Koenig was critical of the correctional department, saying he didn’t believe the official version of Keye’s death that was released by the Department of Corrections.
Prior to his death, Keyes had been giving information to investigators concerning the Koenig case as well as as many as eight other cases in which he was believed to be involved in.
Keyes was to go on trial in March for the slaying of Samantha Koenig.
There is no word if any of the officers involved in the razor incident were reprimanded for the mistake.
